I live in Virginia and peanuts are a large CROP here. That's why there are so many peanut stands. As for the Waffle Houses, that's like asking why there are so many McDonald's. It's a chain restaurant just like any other.

Listen Dear,
In the South, the "Dirty South," Peanuts were the one thing you could count on being able to find to eat if there was nothing else. People could always find a dirty patch growing peanuts of (e.g. Pres. Jimmy Carter). Now, these people were hungry. They would eat practically anything, like the pig's intestines. So, you see peanuts then would be T-bone Steak and Caviar of today to the people then, who didn't know what to eat next. Not long ago a very Southern man, whose ignorance I still don't understand started his "Rap" by offering me some PEANUTS and a pair of Black Pumps. I did not know what to say. Neither would you. So, in order not to hurt his feelings, I started laughing, because I really didn't know what he was talking about. It turns out that if a man offers you some peanuts, he wants to marry you. He was from Mississippi. As for the Waffle Houses, the Cooks can cook anything and make it taste good. You can always get a good meal at the Pancake House, and their not stingy with the food either. They must know you would not have stopped if you weren't really hungry for something really good and filling.

I'm in Texas...don't know about the peanut thing, that always seemed to be more of a yankee thing than a southerner thing. I'm either missing them or there just aren't "peanut joints" in Texas. Waffle House on the other hand...have you ever eaten there? Decent food, it's the late night crowd and the atmosphere more than anything. Although I wish we had a Waffle House in my town. There's enough other places to go than having to drive two hours to get to a Waffle House, but anytime I'm in a city that has one...I'm there.

I am not sure about the waffle houses (are a transplant to the south or residing north of the mason dixon?) but the peanuts and other agriculture is a mainstay of soul food!! The south has always been dependant on agriculture for economic stability as in the south there are perfect condition for growing and producing certain types of food sources. Peanuts, cotton (cottonseed oil), honey, potatos, ect. Even the pig has evolved into a delicious southern delicacy(ham hocks and barbecue). We native southerners have learned to make the best food in the world with what we have native to us and we are proud to share it with the world!!! MMMM...makes me want collards.......

The short answer is: we like them! As for the Waffle House, it's good, it cheap and you can generally find a seat. Really, when you are down our way, stop in to a Waffle House. They have the absolutely best omelets you've ever tasted!

They grow peanuts here in Virginia (and many places in the south), but whatever a peanut is a peanut to me. But Waffle House is good eatin'! Hashbrowns scattered, smothered, and covered and sweet tea will set you straight!

waffle house makes knock out breakfast, not just waffles. i haven't seen any peanut shops here in Texas. here the big thing is the Pecan. by the way, you pronounce it puh kon, do not ask for a pee can, you might just receive a slop jar

I just got back from a trip to North Carolina. I think it's neat, all those goobers and pancakes. BTW here in California roasted peanuts and IHOP are very popular. So where do you live?
