1.5 yd is a lot bigger than 18 inches, so the biggest circle would be 18 inches in diameter. You can see this by looking at something long and narrow like a ruler - no matter how long the ruler is, you cannot create a circle with a diameter that is bigger than the width of the ruler.

So, if d = 18inches, the radius is half this, or 9 inches, and the area is Pi r^2

Pi * 9*9 = 254.5 sq inches, or about 0.2 sq yards.

Of course, if you are allowed to stitch two (or more) pieces of fabric together to make your circle, we can get a signifigantly bigger circle. And if you are creating this circle in the real world you may need to bear in mind the need to sew on a hem etc.

The circle diameter would have to be either 1.5 yd = 54 in, or 18 in, which ever is smaller. So the circle diameter is 18 in. A larger circle would not fit on the fabric.

The circle radius is half that, or 9 inches.

The circle area is pi x radius x radius

You didn't specify if the circle has to be cut out in one piece, in which case the largest diameter is 18 inches, obviously. The problem gets more complicated if more pieces could be cut out which are then rearranged and sewn together to make a circle. The maximum size circle has the same area as the fabric, or 18 x 54 = 972, which is a circle of roughly 35.18 inches in diameter. But this is just a theoretical answer, far from a practical one, as it would require an infinity of pieces to cut out and put together.

Unless there's some trick here, I'd say it's 254 square inches.

The longest radius you can have is 9 inches. Apply the formula for the area of a circle with a 9 inch radius.

diameter of circle=18"
The radius is from the centre of the circle straight line to the perimeter of the circle (1/2 the diameter)

Finding the area of a circle=pi*r^2
Since the radius will be 9"...9^2 (or 9*9) is 81.
81*pi is about 254.47" sq.

Since 1.5yd is 48", you should be able to make 4.

Well it can't be more than 18 inches in diameter or 9" radius, so
A = pi*r^2 = 81*pi = approx. 254 sq.in.

I think you need to open a book. These are very easy if you're not too busy in a chat room or playing video games.
