normally it is 2 days. What they are going to watch for is how is your baby feeding (breast or bottle). They will ensure that any tests they do on the baby are within normal ranges.
Also they will make sure you are comfortable with handling your baby and you have the right support systems at home.

I had my son at 10:00 p.m. I stayed in the hospital that night and the next night. All total, I spent about 36 hours in the hospital. It really depends on the policy of the hospital, the doctor, and even your insurance company. Most hospitals and doctors want you to remain in the hospital 24 hours just to make sure everything is okay.

In the Uk on my leaflet (Im 20 weeks pregnant) it say 6 hours after giving birth. However if you wish to stay in 2 day you can and they will kick you out the door. I intend to leave sooner, who want to stay in a unclean hospital! Send me home so I can have a bell and be properly looked after.

I was in the hospital for only one day, and my son was 10lbs, 6oz... he was a BIG baby. I got released the next day but stayed in for another 4 days with my son because he was sick when he was born... but technically, I was relased within I'd say 30 hours of delivery. No complications were present with my labour, though.

when i had my daughter it was on a night time and i was able to go home the next day but i choose to stay another night so i could have help when breast feeding. i'm from the u.k and it is possible to stay for longer if you are unsure and still nervous of being left alone with your baby. especially if your a first time mum. i know with my next baby i will stay in for a couple of days again as i would like to try and breast feed again.

i dont know how it works in other countries though.

hope this helps x

With all three of my kids it has been two days. It can depend on what time you deliver though. With my middle child I was only in the hospital for a day and a half.

when I had my first child it was usual to stay in hospital for 10 days, but nowadays I,ve known people to come home on the same day as giving birth.
