My husband has an older car he just loves but I swear we are constantly fixing it. Monday is started stalling while in idle and now it won't start at all. Any thought on what it could be and how much it would be to fix? I am trying to figure out if I should have it looked at or just ditch the car all together. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Ah another case for the psychic mechanic, not enough information to point a wrench at.
first thing that comes to mind is the fuel/ fuel filter is clogged. "older" cars can have sediments in the fuel tank over time.
Second is carbon build up on points and/or rotor this is an "older car"right?
third is that rubber insulation on wires tends to dry out and crack over time, just like rubber belts and hoses. in the freezing cold it can become very brittle and lose its insulation quality's, have the park plug wires and ignition cables checked for insulation leaks.

That is 3 things and that is a lucky number

could be lots of things: has it got fuel? you may have water in the fuel tank; when was the last time the air filter was changed.
have a look at the spark pugs, I ran into a similar situation and the problem was the plugs were completely shot, no electrodes left at all. We had a 1979 valiant that did that, we ditched the car, turned out to be a computer failure.

it really sounds like your fuel pump is going out or your fuel pick up line is to high and when the tank is full it runs fine. for the best advise ask a certified repair station because you dont want to thro money away replacing parts that are not broken. after getting the advise from the repair station and if u have the mesans and are capable enough to repair it your self get the maintence manual and follow it step by step and u can save your self alout of money. be careful when changing it your self i would i would recomend an empty tank befor attempting this task.

It could be as simple as a clogged fuel filter, timing could be off, or it could be worse, I would replace a couple of the cheaper things and if that doesn't work ask your husband if he really loves the car. It may be cheaper in the long run to replace the car. Good luck!!!

It could be your fuel pump. My car did the same thing. The cost will depend on your car's make and year and all that. But mine is a Chevy Lumina and it cost us a little over 300$ to have it fixed.

i feel for you. My husband has older cars that seem to take up all his free time to fix. He is also ASE certified mechanic so he has the ability to fix these things.
I suggest you check the alternator first, then if that is okay, check for any vacuum leaks. more times that not it is something really simple and relatively inexpensive to fix. Good Luck.

Please give us the info on what type of car, what year, engine, etc. Many problems are more common on certain models and from this you could be talking about virtually any car or year on the planet. :-) l
