They probably did it hoping htat it would go viral, but realising that they had nothing to lose and everything to gain whether it did or not.

to be honest when I first saw this i thought it might be a hoax. There's one similar around for Borders too. When you do the maths though, Threshers have 2 for 3 offers on at all times on wine and champagne, 40% off is pretty much the same offer but sounds much more dramatic and impressive.
Don't think it will be a mistake for them, unless they haven't got the stock in to deal with demand.
would not like to be working there for the next couple of weeks. poor things!

To be honest, I think it's a mistake. I work for them, and I don't think they thought that it would get out of hand this quickly, if at all.
We've had customers coming into the shop with vouchers they've been emailed from friends, and seeing that this was initially intended for Business Partners and friends, it has seemingly gotten out of hand.
It's certainly helped pre-Christmas business, but as to whether or not this will mean a return by customers will just have to be seen.

I think it is genuine, but was intended to be small scale.

Usually with this sort of thing, the smallprint says "cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer", so if Thresher wanted to wriggle out of it, they could just have lots of lesser offers.

Sounds like a marketing screw up to me, like a few years back when Hoover offered free holidays. Demand was phenomenal.

This question jumped right out at me since my last name is Thrasher. I looked at this, and I can tell you that in my opinion this is either a really big mistake, or one of the cleverest viral campaigns I have seen in a while. If nobody gets publicly fired, it is pure unadulterated marketing!!! We shall see!

It seems to be a genuine offer but was originally intended for a very small number of people to use.

Made me laugh, just goes to show that who you know is better than what you know. Shows that the spirit of people is growing due to the internet, and thank you for highlighting this offer, will come in handy. :-)
