In Qunice, Mass an IHOP wants your dirivers' license before they will seat you. They claim it is to stop people from leavig without paying the bill. Customers fear identify theft.
(1)Whose side do you take? -might depend on your job experience
(2)If it was your ID would you hand it over?
IHOP released a statement - it would reverse the policy immediately.

Some say my question is dumb but it happened at IHOP - it could happen elsewhere so ............
Would you give up your ID in a public place such as at a restaurant ? With the current climate of identify theft should this be any company's policy?

No this is a good question. I can see both sides of it.
First of all, I've never done and dine-n-dash, but if I did, it wouldn't be at freakin' IHOP. I can afford IHOP. Besides I'm so bogged down with pancakes when I leave there I couldn't make a getaway if someone tried to stop me. I'm assuming this kind of stuff happens late night when all the bar-goers roll in. I wouldn't give my ID to just anyone, and it'd make me feel like they thought all their customers were crooks. It would be better to station a security guard there to check receipts on the way out the door at problem times, like late nights. It a huge liability too, to handle someone's info like that - can you imagine the lawsuit if an employee did steal personal info or the ID was returned to the wrong person??? They'd wish they just wrote off those $25 walk-out tickets then!

No way! Have you seen the workers at some of the IHOPS? They look like thugs. Plus, their food isn't worth it. The last time I went to IHOP, the coffee was cold, and when they brought out my biscuits and gravy, they were COLD too. Not lukewarm, COLD! If restaurants want to stop people from running out, they need to a) keep a better eye on them, or b) make them pay ahead of time for their food.

Nope, not to eat pancakes...I don't eat pancakes there anyway...I love the stuffed fronch toast...but I wouldn't give up my ID for that either....at a nail salon, where my friend USED to work, they started wanting your credit card number before they would give you an appointment...they said because of so many "no-shows", this way rather you show up or not, they still charge your card and get paid as if you kept the appointment.... guess they are going to lose alot of business too!

I have to give and ID when I go play pool or when I open a tab at a bar, I have no problem with it.

Maybe they should just train the hostess better and make her actually pay attention.

I'd never do it. I would go without ID and when they refused to seat me, I'd sue them and get rich for discrimination.
With my money, I'd buy the location, and serve pancakes to the homeless.

It was apparently only in one resturant. I'd have walked out and contacted the distrct level manager about it.
