Some cats and dogs actually do get along.

But, for some breeds of dogs, it is their natural instict to chase small animals, thus why they chase cats!

And some cats really don't like big slobbery dogs all in their face! haha!

Because cats suck.

Just teasing (sort of). Most of my the cats and dogs I have had in the past did get along. I think if they are raised together they get a long fine. Dogs pretty much like to chase anything though (cars, cats, horses, their own tails) so maybe the cat runs or attacks in self defense because they do not know why the crazy dog is after them.

Thats just rubbish. I had a dog for 3 years then we got a kitten and after lots of TLC given to both of them he took to the kitten. They would play with eachother and go everywhere together. If someones had a dog for a long time then it can be hard to get the dog to except the cat, espically if its always been used to chasing them. Same with a cat, if its always been used to running from a dog then it may not ever except it.

Dogs and Cats get on better if brought together as puppy and kitten. Or you will also find that a puppy thats not too big or playful will be excepted by an older cat and the same goes for a kitten with a dog.

It all depends on the actual animal itself and how much time and patience their owner has.

A LOT of cats and dogs do get along, even if in nature they wouldn't be hanging out together but rather fighting over food or the bigger hunting the smaller...

You have more of a chance of your cat and dog to like and even play with each other if they got introduced real small, like with human kids we don't see nor care if the others are quite different... fear and prejudice comes later when we meet what was strange to us as kids and when others influence us...

In the real world they do. I have a dog and cat that get along like they are brothers.

I don't know, I have three cats. two females and one male. Ages 7,5 and 2. And three dogs- 10yr. old, 1 year old and 7 weeks old, and they all get along!! No chasing, clawing, snarling nothing. I think it depends on well you socialize your dog and cat together so they know they are no threat to each other. My dogs and cats have no fear of the opposite outside of our yard either. I have seen them greet others. It is surprising on how this question is a stereo type against the breeds for years and years ago. I don't see it that much anymore.

This is a historical outcome of the internecine feline/canine wars of the 35th (animal years) Century.

After years of atomic and conventional bombardment, nerve gases and other biological toxins were deployed. The animals that survived were reduced in both stature and intelligence. When Man came along and started to take over the world these stunted remnants were readily domesticated, but retained dimly perceived antipathies from their antagonistic pasts

Cats and dogs have totally different body language.

When cats lift their tails high, it means they're happy. When dogs lift their tails high, it means they're aggressive.
When cats lay their ears back, it means they're aggressive. When dogs lay their ears back, it means they're submissive.
When cats flip onto their backs, it means they're about to attack. When dogs flip onto their backs, it means you're the boss.
When cats move their tails back and forth, it means they're irritated or on the hunt. When dogs move their tails back and forth, it usually means they're friendly.

The resulting misunderstandings generate mistrust and dislike. Imagine being a puppy who barks at a cat and is greeted by a wagging tail. Yay, a friend! Oh, claws in the face... The cat flips onto its back. Ooh, he gives up; I can go sniff him if I want. Oh, claws in the face...

When cats and dogs are very mellow and tolerant, or they've been raised with each other, it works itself out though.

They're different animals.
In the wild, a mountain lion would kill a wolf. That's what cat and dog owners deal with (on a smaller scale).
