I already have. I collected non perishable foods from neighbors and donated all the bags to the food bank.

If Christmas is the only time we help these people, they are doomed!
Encourage the government to provide the proper care for the mentally ill (who make up the majority of homeless people) and to also provide for services for alcohol and drug addicts (who also fill up the ranks of the homeless).
You need to write letters to all levels of government officials who are charges with the responsibility for caring for these people.
Then, you volunteer to work at a homeless shelter, on other agency that has been established.
Giving money to the homeless does nothing to solve their underlying problems. Until the cause of their problem is addressed, they will not receive the help they really need.

I actually do help. If you're asking what you can do, find out what they need. If it's food, give them food. Help out at a shelter. Donate coats or cloths.
If they have kids, buy a few toys that they can carry with them.
If they need to find jobs, try helping them with their resumes or letting them print some out. Donate some decent cloths for job interviews. Give them a haircut (I saw that on a TV show once, a local woman was giving free haircuts to people so they looked good for job interviews).
I always recommend getting involved with a local organization to help out. They know a lot more about what's going on in the local community and can better guide your efforts.

Yes all people can but it is best done through a homeless shelter like a rescue mission. 2/3rds of the homeless have either mental health issues or bad addiction issues that the layman is not and should not try to fix. Donations and volunteer work at these rescue missions is the way to help.

Yep, a friend's husband lost his job, and she is on disability with a bad back. They have NO money for presents for their daughter. So some friends and I got together a collection to give this little girl a great Christmas.

The homeless, they choose to be that way. But The poor yes. I would help a poor person, due to the fact they are actually working but their wages can pay for the minimal stuff. While some homeless people are getting SSI and SSDI and living like kings and queens.
