Ive been on the net for years but still don't know what it means when people type 'lol', call me what you will but can someone please fill me in?

30th answer. I was just going to ask the same question. I've also seen it on serious questions and was wondering if it also meant lots of luck. That maybe LOL and lol meant different things.

LOL = Lord Oliver of Luxembourg.
The reason he has his own abrieviation is that he really was very famous in C17, but his name is quite long and if you just called him 'Ollie' he would cut your head off. So they called him LOL and then everyone laughed at him. Next time someone say LOL you'll know what they mean and you can inform them that now old Ollie is dead they can just say 'Ollie' like the rest of us...

I think it can mean either 'laugh out loud' or 'lots of love' depending on the conversation.
