I want the ceiling to stay popcorn. I plan to paint the whole thing after I have repaired the area where the wall was. There are 2x4s running the length of the exposed area, and they will come down, which will leave a big area needing repair. There are no issues with support; already taken care of that. Any help will be appreciated! Thank you!

You can use sheetrock (wallboard) but be careful to get it aligned with the rest of the ceiling...then assuming you want to keep the popcorn you can buy a can or two or three of te stuff at the hardware store and try to match what is on your ceiling. Or you could remove the popcorn everywhere.

i removed a wall between my dining and living room and also have popcorn ceilings. it left a terrible mess where the wall was, and in the end i put up an artificial beam over the mess. looks really great. i even added a couple more to the rest of the room and now it looks like i have beamed ceilings. i made the beams from smooth solid foam insulation sheets cut into 4 inch wide strips. once primed and painted, they look just like 4x4 beams. use the special foamboard glue for construction

DO NOT REMOVE the popcorn ceiling. It most likely contains asbestos which can give you cancer. The beam idea sounds like the way to go. Matching the popcorn texture is not going to happen.
