Why can't the liberals and conservatives come to a middle of the road agreement? Wouldn't that be best for our country? Or in the grand scheme of things do you think that they intentionally keep us divided to keep us distracted from what they are really doing?

I don't think most people are politically moderate in the sense that each of their beliefs are middle of the road. Rather, I think they are moderate because they hold beliefs that are both conservative and liberal. For instance, my best friend is pro-choice and strongly supports gay marriage, but she is adamantly opposed to affirmative action and supports privatizing social security. Some of her beliefs are liberal and some are conservative, so she is labeled a "moderate," but I doubt she would be willing to compromise on any of these individual beliefs. It's up to the public to weigh our own beliefs against each other to determine who we want to elect to represent us.To use my friend as an example again, she registers as a democrat and usually votes as such because she feels that gay marriage rights and supporting abortion is more important than abolishing affirmative action or modifying social security. Like my friend, most people's personal beliefs fall across the entire political spectrum, which makes it impossible to placate all people all of the time. I think the public would be far unhappier if politicians compromised on every issue all of the time. If that were the case, the general public as a whole would be unsatisfied with the government and all of its laws, as opposed to right now when only some of the population is unhappy with only some of the laws.

Because your whole premise is completely false. 80% of this country is right of the media's position. Every time a Republican runs as a conservative Republican in a national election, they win a landslide. See Reagan in 80 and Newt in 94. When they do not do what they run on they are voted out: Bush Sr, the recent elections, etc.

There are two seperate reasons why the two parties can't agree.

The liberals won't meet conservatives on middle ground because so many of them as so extreme, or are too preoccupied with being obstructionists.

The conservatives won't meet liberals on middle ground because what constitutes "middle ground" is not good for America. In other words, conservatives have core principles. Liberals just do whatever it takes to get elected.

I believe there is an absolute right and wrong in politics, and most of the time liberals are wrong. I'll come to middle ground with a liberal, as long as it doesn't constitute selling my soul.

Right wing Republicans are the architects of extreme divisive politics. Perhaps moderate Republicans can put a halt to this in the near future. As long as the initial aggressors continue their attack tactics, the Democrats can only respond in kind. When Democrats attempt to placate such rabid and immovable opposition, they gain nothing politically; they merely emasulate and marginalize themselves.

democrats and repulicans can.. they did all the time in the Clinton administration... but the LibHawks and the Neocons can not... extremism in any form is not what is best for this nation.. that is why the past 6 years have been so bad... not because we have an inept president... but because there has been no moderate balance.. republicans held all branches and the president leans towards being an extremist.... now we can have a balance again and our nation can progress.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease and the sensational story gets the coverage. Divided, maybe but I liken it to more like two brothers fighting. They mess with each other all the time but do not try to mess with them both as they will kick your azz. ie. When the world trade center went down we were no longer repuglicans and democrats we were Americans

I think that most people are moderates. Or a mixture of conservative and liberal. The problems always seem to go back to the "wedge issues" that the politicians are always stirring up. If we could get rid of the so called wedge issues, it would be one big happy family of Americans. But don't count on politicians letting that happen.

nope... everyone has differences of opinions-that is why we have two different parties (well 3 now)- because not everyone agrees what is best for our country... I think gay people should be able to get married, apparently not everyone agrees with that-I think abortion needs to stay legal-apparently not everyone agrees with that, I think we don't do enough for our environment-obviously not everyone agrees with that.. could you imagine if everyone agreed we would still have slavery, we would still be hanging people accusing them of witch craft, we would have killed off all the Native Americans... our country is based on differences of opinions.. that's why it's important to get out there and vote.. so your opinions are heard
