Yes, I never know what to say. I hate to lie, but it's hard not to when there's nothing true to say that would not be an insult. If it's clothing, I guess you can go by "well, but it didn't fit," or "it didn't match anything else in my closet." Leave out the part that the reason is the color is perfectly hideous.
But if it's not clothing, it's hard to have any thing to say except thank you. Maybe "Well, that will come in handy," even if you don't expect it is yourself who will find it so. Or use it briefly and then "accidentally" damage it beyond repair. Or just put it in storage or give it to the local thrift store.
I do hate to have to lie to people though, don't you? The moral to the story is to choose gifts with real care for the tastes of the person who is to receive it, or give gift cards and let them pick out their own.

Yes, b/c you hope they know you well enough to buy you something you like and you don't want to hurt their feelings, but you really put an effort into their gift. If only you had spent a little more time getting to know each other better.

Makes me wonder why they think it's the perfect gift for me.
The problem people sometimes have with buying for me is that they buy for my personality (which is kind of goofy, perky, unique, diverse, non-traditional, etc) instead of my tastes (which are very traditional, mild, muted).
So I've come to accept that and make the best of it. But if it's expensive and just won't work, I have no qualms approaching them gently to see what can be done to make sure their money doesn't go to waste.

It does not make me sad if that someone DOES NOT know what I like or not. I will happily accept the gift.
Keep in mind people change.
I started liking few things when someone close to me gave those things as gift to me.

Well, that happened to me once or twice, but it wasn't because I didn't like it. It was because I couldn't accept it... Just the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eyes as he gave me the gift made me want to cry because I had said, "I can't accept it."
I felt like crap afterwards... Still do, in a way even though it was 10 months ago...

i try to see their INTENT behind the gift and feel happy.
i try to put the gift to a good use for someone who wants it
or give it away. this situation doesn't have to upset you.
just accept the gift and smile and focus on the INTENT of the person who is giving you a gift.

No. Dragon is polite about it. She does not want to seem ungrateful and she has much practice in receiving gifts that are bad.

I still couldn't be happier. The thought alone that they put into the gift is priceless.

it makes me sad because i think that people would not see the real me. meaning that they give me something because they think i like it and they are wrong about it and don't understand what i really like.
