The two concepts probably became divided at the point that Greek culture gave way to Roman civilization and especially after the advent of Christianity. Greek culture, especially that in Sparta and Athens, were based almost completely on maintaining one's HONOR as a scholar or warrior. The importance of the idea of MORAL or morality became important later. For a detailed discussion of this see:

they start out as different words because they are both only concepts and change for culture to culture and person to person to try and make a case for them being the same is just as easy (or hard) as it is is for making a case for them not being the same. we focus too much on explaining what we think the meaning is and not enough watching our personal moral compass close enough and honoring what it tells us to do.

Honor means being true to yourself and you society.
Moral means doing that which is right.
