If you use a mitt like this one;

you can clean the stove anyway you want and once its clean, just use the mitt to shine away the streaks. I bought a couple of really great, fat microfiber mitts at the Dollar General Store ($3 each) and I use them to polish just about everything in my kitchen. The stove, frig, dishwasher and coffee maker are all shiny black. My countertops are Formica and they're a mottled black called Labrador. It looks a LOT like the actual granite by the same name. Works great and it all looks beautiful after I'm done.

I know exactly how you feel and I to have a black stove top and when I'm finished cleaning it I use a damp paper towel to make it unstreaked. Sometime I use the throwaway window cleaner thingeys.
