If you like Lord of the Rings, there's a bunch of themes there and since there's three movies you'd have lots of examples and scenes to use. There's forbidden love (between Arwen and Aragorn), sacrifice (no specific examples, just an overall theme of the movie), war's effect on people (shown in The Two Towers in a little monologue by Faramir as Frodo and Sam are captured and towards the end of The Return of the King with how Frodo copes with being back home), triumph of good over evil (once again, an overall theme), and the power of friendship (between Frodo and Sam, also between Merry and Pippin). I'm sure you can find more if you just watch the movies or search the net. The movies may have only been around for the last few years but the books have been around since the fifties and there have been numerous books and websites published talking about the various themes of this movie.

There's a fantastic movie called, "Once Were Warriors," from New Zealand. It's in English. You could certainly do it on either of those topics you mentioned.

Basis of the story is there's a woman who comes from a long line of warriors (who are obviously no longer warriors, as that tribal tradition has died out). She marries a man she loves with all her heart. They're both heavy drinkers and he is a mean drunk. They have children who are all suffering in some way.

You would have many themes to choose from in this movie. How alcohol destroys love, how civilization is not necessarily more civilized than the old ways, the different types of pride, abuse...

It's an incredibly sad movie, but it is so intense and moving. The actors are brilliant, the set is excellent and the writing is amazing. Any teacher would be impressed that you chose a non-mainstream movie and put some thought into it. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you check this movie out.

The pain of love theme might work with the movie "Cruel Intentions". Ryan Phillippe really shows a great deal of pain throughout the film.

Have you seen Stranger Than Fiction? There is such a good story there. To summarize - we all have the same amount of time each do, it's up to us how to spend it - yet we don't all have the same amount of time on this earth, therefore it's also up to us how we spend it. There are other messages in the movie that you'll just have to watch to pick up on.
