It's difficult to cooperate in order to make the country stronger when the other guy doesn't want the country to be stronger, and invests in the country's defeat at every turn. If the liberals of today existed in the 1940's they would have been committed or tried for treason.
Sure, I'll "come together" with a liberal, as long as he's an American and not a closet card-carrying communist. If they would drop their anti-American bilge it would be a simple task.

People who identify themselves as liberals or conservative are absurd. Few people are one or the other. Entertainers like to identify themselves as liberals and do so as though they are afraid not to, like some kind of McCarthy era litmus test. A lot of goofy people call themselves conservatives because they think it makes them a cowboy or a real American. The truth is the country is mostly moderates and that is simply why Republican Presidents get elected at all. Whenever the Dem Party swings to far into la-la land, doing bizarre things to please the tiny interest groups inside their own party, then milllions of moderate Dems vote for Repub. I am a Dem, live in a state 6 tro 1 Dem, we have little Repub representation in the state government and yet we voted for Bush twice and are identified by the liberal side of the Dem Party as a Red State. We are Dems, maybe the National Democratic Party is not so much. A lot of people are conservative on issues like national security but liberal on social justice issues. Welfare, abortion and other left type ideas have existed and expanded no matter who is in the White House or Congress because they are complicated issues and there is no right wing or left wing solution. Gun control did not abate under the Republicans (though the assualt rifle ban did expire) and right wing issues are no further along. We are a country of moderates, the national parties are screwed up and really do not represent many of us at any given time. The recent election that gave Dems a majority in Congress is deceptive because many of those newly elected Dems are moderate to mod/right Democrats who did not represent traditional liberal issues in their precincts but took moderate votes away from Repubs. To hear Danny Devito and Rosie ODonnell and the rest talk there has been a massive left movement. Nope, if our party does not put a viable national candidate up next and not someone who comes from a special interest group inside the Dem Party, then we will have another Republican President. Government and politics are really different animals but people think they are the same. Nope, not much changes or changes quickly because this is a moderate country. Every key issue on the table from the first time W ran is still out there. If you think you are a lib or a conser then what you really are is an idiot and thank God you all X each other on election day.

I agree. First I'd stop the name calling and all the insults altho I'm guilty of this at times. Stop the accusations making it sound like if I believe such and such I'm so wrong. Then it gets harder cause as a Conservative I will never back down from what I believe is right and so I think if we could even agree to disagree. I think it should be alright if I want to be a Christian and not have my rights taken away and if an athiest wants to be athiest fine. It's funny how at work this all doesn't seem to be a problem. If the media would stop it's nonsense and Hollywood wouldn't promote these divisions it would help. Yes we would be a much stronger united country, I think people forgot we are at war!

Sorry to disappoint Danial A, but I am a so called Liberal and I am not a communist and I do not hate my country. Maybe Danial A is the key here. If more people understood each other, there would be less fighting. People here in Yahoo land seem to have a very set stereo type of the other party. Most of which is b.s. for both sides.
I have just as many, if not more Republican friends than I do Democrat friends. I am in a very Red state and there are a lot of Republicans. We get along very well as long as we leave politics out of the conversation. Although, one thing I have found about my Republican friends is that they will bring politics to the table more often than not. I just ignore it. That is why I get on here. to vent my feelings and frustrations.

Both sides have to understand and appreciate that just because someone in the other has a different point of view, it doesn't make them any less patriotic. It's not like either side has a vast majority in congress. The split was practically 50/50 before the election and even though power has shifted both parties still each only represent only half of the population. Any politician or citizen who is not working with the other party to find common ground and work out our problems is not working in the best interests of the country.

If there was a ceasation of all the political muckraking from both sides for an extend period of time we might get away from the us vs them mentality, but don't hold your breath. It would be nice if we could get a real middle of the road Independant party, elect their candidates, and give a wake up call to both sides.

Why is it all about 'liberals' and 'conservatives'? The majority of the American people consider themselves to be political moderates.
