I just heard on the news that if you plan on becoming preggers or are preggers you should not be on that. It causes heart birth defects in the babies.

Today's New York Times www.nytimes.com published another warning that alerts every woman to risks of Paxil if they are expecting a baby or may become pregnant. The Times reported that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists www.acog.org has warned that women who are pregnant, or plan to be, should avoid taking Paxil because of a risk of birth defects. ACOG published its alert in the December issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology, its important journal.

It has been almost a year since the Food and Drug Administration www.fda.gov and GlaxoSmithKline www.gsk.com issued warnings about an increased risk of birth defects in babies born to mothers taking Paxil.

Alarmingly, two studies of pregnant women who were taking Paxil during their first trimester have shown that their babies suffer heart defects at a rate as much as twice what is normal, the FDA said about one year ago. Now the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has discussed treatment of pregnant women with SSRIs, a class of antidepressants that includes Prozac, Zoloft and Lexapro as well as Paxil.

In no case should a woman become pregnant while taking paxil. Not at the onset, not at conception, not at the end. See the links below for further ideas.

It is something only a woman and her doctor can decide. It is most dangerous in the first trimester (less so after that). It's something that they must weigh the risks of. A severely depressed woman is not doing her baby any good, and the actual risk is pretty low for birth defects.

Anyone pregnant and taking it should contact their doctor.

In MOST cases I would say NO, as it has been found to cause birth defects.

But in some cases, if the mother is suffering from severe depression and there is a high risk of suicide, then I would say yes, she should continue taking the medication.

Please contact your doctor for more information.

Thats a doctor question. Then they can go over risks vs benefits with you. Good luck to you!
