Rubbish - you are supposed to mid your maximum that you are willing to pay whenever you want - that's the point of a dutch auction.
What you seem to want is for 1 day auctions everywhere.
What is annoying is if you bid with 5 days to go, and are outbid in the last minute - but heh f you have nid your maximum you are willing to pay anyway, then at the end it went for too much.

I think you'll find on some items, that many people have two ebay identities. They are open simultaneously on the same computer, and can bid up items. Its a fact of ebay. The best method with ebay is to put in the maximum you are prepared to go initially, then you never lose out. If it goes higher - it was too much anyway, if it goes within your limit - you automatically pay the least amount which still wins. Easy.

Uhhh its called bidding. So its never unfair. Some people bid early, some people bid at the last three seconds and then usually win the item. I hate waiting three day to see if I won, so I usually bid an hour before the action ends and then watch it to see if I am winning or loosing and if I want to bid higher.

This doesnt make sense! A bid is a bid. If someone wants to bid, then fine. If their bid is the highest then they are obliged to pay and take the item.
All auctions are selfish in the sense that the competing bidders each want their own bid to succeed, and also want to have the item as cheaply as possible. Equally the vendor wants the price to be as high as possible!
So I must admit to being totally perplexed by your question...

If you are just going to bid on something to make someone else pay more I think it is rude especially if you don't want the item you are bidding on. It is possible for you to get stuck with the item if you are just bidding to make the price higher because someone might not bid anymore on the item.

It is not selfish behavior. Quite the contrary. I think it is selfish to bid at the very last minute. While not cheating per se, it is still underhanded and doesn't allow for anyone else to outbid them, because they are doing it at the last possible moment. Bidding on items days before they end is not only honorable, but the right thing to do, in my opinion.

no it is not a bid is a bid is a bid is a bid and you can bid whatever you want whenever you want to as long as you are willing to pay what you bid it will be to your best interest to bid some time ahead of the auction end your maximum bid and you will have the best chance of winning for a good price

It is not selfish, as long as you are willing to procede with the transaction if you happen to win. However, if you are bidding on your own item that you are selling, in order to get other people to bid higher, it could actually be illegal, depending on where you live.

i don't think it's a bit unfair.
my time is valuable and i can't be looking things up
over and over all the time.
i might put in a bid for what i am willing to pay.
if it drives the price up for you, too bad.
because i was willing to pay what i bid.
to get it over me you have to pay the higher price.
if you were a seller instead of a buyer, your perspective might be different. they want the highest price possible.

I agree with you that it is selfish. Unfortunately, whenever money is involved, there is not much room for sentiment. Everyone employs their own tactics to try to get a product at the best price.
I am reminded of a saying I once heard; "There are no friends in business".
