Talking about the USA? I believe America has a problem with it's social system. If you just give people without a job some money to live from, they won't start stealing so quickly. And it's a fact that colored people have more problems of finding a job (because of racial prejudices).
On top of that, there's the fact that it has been proved, that 1/5 of the people in death row, are their innocent. If only they would do those laboratory tests before prisoners are put to death!
And another thing is that the police always focus on that what people want to see, so if there are lots of racists in the country, the police will try to catch lots of colored people.
And by the way; why is Bush still walking out there? He had no permission to start a war in Iraq, so indirectly, he caused the death of millions of people. He's white, but won't get convicted, you know, even though he's done a lot more wrong than some small criminals in prison, and he's a lot more dangerous to human kind, because he has power. And he's just one example. Ever heard of white-collar crime? There are quite a lot of white people not in prison, even though they deserve it. They commit much more serious crimes, they're just better in covering it up.

Oh, but you've said two very different things. Criminals are one thing; people in prison are another. There is, of course, considerable overlap. But they are not the same population. And I daresay we know nothing of the statistics of the actual number of criminals and their racial breakdown.

The prison population is indeed disproportionately black, but the reasons are many and complex. Part of it, inevitably, is that black people take larger risks in criminal activities, while well-connected whites (even organized crime) stay behind the scenes. Then, too, there is the disproportionate number of blacks in jail for drug offenses specifically, and the fact that probably a great many of their customers were white, but they took the risk for the high profits, because they considered they had fewer options. If the drug war were to end, and all the people arrested for drug offenses only -- no theft, not violence -- were sent home in a general amnesty, those that remained would be a very different population. And I strongly suspect not so disproportionately black.

If you were then to separate out those that would not have been violent or thieving if it were not for the illegal aspect of their drug habits, another change would be visible in the makeup of the population.

The War on Drugs is the worst war this country has ever fought, and yet nobody talks about a peace proposal.

It's a very good question actually and one that should be researched but people are to PC to work on this kind of thing it is Incredible that all ethinic minorities make up less than 10% of the population in the UK but the majority of the prison population there must be a reson for it. And i refuse to believe it is because we are that institutionally racist. I seriously blame Hip Hop

Blacks commit more crime per ca pita. I know this statement is going to piss some people off, but the truth can be offensive. I cannot explain the sociology of this fact. Many will speculate, but black Americans lead the country in many negative categories. Facts are simply facts and I am not trying to offend anyone.

PER CA PITA
illiteracy
female obesity
lowest ACT score
prison population
female aids cases
violent crime
single parent homes

It's because the system has failed us and is against us in many ways. We are not as educated or as wealthy as white people --- add to that racism --- and you have an entire people who have fewer resources than their white counterparts.
However, I do believe that it is in part our faults as well as a people. We blame white people for our problems too much. We have our civil rights, and yet many of us don't take advantage of them. And, many of our parents have failed us, letting us run the streets and do what we want.
We as a people need to solve it. We need to better appreciate education, stop blaming white people, and overcome the general ghetto mentality.

More blacks are uneducated and come from poor home environments and live in areas where Jail means MAN and work means CHUMP and as long as these attitudes are allowed to fester in black communities it will always be like this.

Instead of all us black people saying "no, it ain't so" we need to start saying "when we gonna go and do something about this".

Out of all the countries I've lived in, black American people are the only people who don't support each other.

Once they make it they leave and never look back. They do not own business and do not cater to black owned businesses, they look down on their brothers and sistas who are still clueless instead of cluing them in.

I don't know,,,just blame whitey.

where did you get your information from, I 'm sure that white people have done more crime than any other race, and not much has been done, but a black person get blamed for ever thing, if the justice system was far I'm sure whites would out number any blacks any day, but since that will never happen then yes blacks out number whites.

It has to deal with the justice system and the way that it works. It is because of society and social reasons as well.

I don't know. But if I had to guess, I would say b/c a lot of them live in poverty and resort to criminal behavior to get funds or whatever they want. I hope that doesn't offend anyone, it is just my rationale.

that number, if true, only reflects the number caught, tried, convicted and sentenced to prison.

How many Fortune 500 crooks get convicted? Or inside-Beltway thugs?
