Ok, I wanna get one thing str8 here, hehehe. 1 December 2006 will forever be kown as the happiest day in a South African gay or lesbian couples life. On that day it became legal for a gay or lesbian couple to get married and obtain full legal rights. Now I wanna know. Im American and gay, if me and my boyfriend fly to South Africa to get married would our 'marriage' be legally recognized under United States law or would it have to be anulled or disolved because its not a recognized law in USA ? I f anyone can shed some light on this subject, please feel free to let me know !

currently, US law would probably not recognize it, any more than it recognizes Canadian or European gay marriage.

I don't know for sure but I think you would have to be a citizen of South Africa in order for your marraige to be recognized here, because anyone can fly there as an American and get married and fly back, but you would still be American and therefore when you came back here the American law would still stand for you.

By the way I think it's stupid. Why should the government decide whether or not 2 people in love should spend the rest of their lives together. Marriage has the same effect on ALL people.

The only place in the States where it might be recognized would be in MA. Why fly to South Africa when you can bop right across the Border to Canada and do the same thing? Your marriage would not be annulled or dissolved, it just would not be recognized. Even in MA if it was recognized it would only entitle you to the benefits the State gives, Federal recognition does not exist for now...........

I'm just sad that South Africa is now officially more progressive than we are.

You don't have to annul your marriage, but it wouldn't be recognized most places.

Unfortunately it will not be recognized. It will only be symbolic to the two of you
