I think I understand what you're asking. I 've read some interesting answers and I think most of them are right. People, in general, have become cynical... it's not "cool" to care. How many times have I heard someone say "they are just too happy" in a VERY disgusted way. I saw the post of the person who stated they don't celebrate chirstmas they celebrate Xmas. so? the "christmas spirit" can also be a general feeling of compassion and caring toward your fellow living things. The religion of my husband and I celebrates Yule/Winter solstice, My family and my husband's family celebrate Chirstmas.... We essentially celebrate both. But the "Spirit of the Season" that warm, gentle loving thing in one's heart.. the thing that makes you hum Deck the Halls while mopping the floors... or makes you empty your change pocket into that red bucket outside the store... makes you get excited at the first snowfall even though you know you have to shovel it later... all of that... that's the spirit. I think, that those of us who have it... regardless of the specific holiday we celebrate should just tell all the crabs, scrooges, cynics etc out there "Happy Holidays to you too!"
as cheerfully as we can every time we hear them Humbug or gripe about how happy someone else is. Dear Questioner, have your Christmas Spirit.... keep it safe and warm and SHOW IT OFF! and do NOT let anyone freeze it out of you, hurt your feelings or bother you in general about if your happy. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Kwanzaa (sp?), Happy Yule, Happy Hanakka (sp?)

Although i still have Christmas spirit, there is not near as many people out there any more that does. Im not saying im the only one that has it though. i have no statistics or anything, but i would say it started bout 5 to 8 years ago. I dont have an answer as to why, other than so many people are tending to go with the worldly ways and often express they are just "too busy" to worry about putting up christmas lights, trees, going to look at others decorations, caroling and such! It can be rather depressing though because its supposed to be such a glorious holiday season when friends and family are supposed to be together, not arguing and fighting like most do these days! I have and always will believe that we should always "keep Christ in Christmas"! I feel that if we do that and start believing more that Christmas would be a whole lot better for most of us and things would be so much more pretty! I miss seeing all the lights people used to put up and it saddens me that i cant share the same feelings i had as a child with my daughter because it truely isnt the same!

Too many people are worried about the commercial end of Christmas that they lose the true meaning. We get so wrapped up (no pun intended) in buying gifts, decorating and working to make more money so we can buy bigger and better things than we did last year that the "spirit of giving" is lost in the shuffle. I pretty much blame the Retail businesses for this a little because every year they put stuff out earlier and earlier and constantly run sales and stay open later and earlier. Advertise about 50% more than they do all year. It makes it really alot of work to stay focused on the meaning of Christmas. I do it buy giving to operation Christmas child and adopting a family each year for Christmas this makes me realize how much I really do have and how I need to appreciate the holidays and not grumble or complain about the decorating or the shopping or anything else that goes along with the holiday. Because I am reminded that if I was not so blessed I would not be having all the activity I do with the holidays. Poor people don't ruin their Christmas they make it as joyful as possible in spite of their financial status. I try every year to see how many smiles I can bring. Merry Christmas!

Aww, how sad. I'm sorry about that. Basically overcomercialization, and the PS3 pretty much put the christmas spirit outta business. But don't worry. Not everyone lost their christmas spirit, as a matter of fact. You just gotta look where you'd least expect.
Cheers.

People celebrate. Unfortunately, the time leading up to the holiday is usually stressful and people just don't have the time to sit down, relax and truly enjoy the season. I'm sure when Christmas Eve/Day comes, they get caught up in the event just the same

Well, it is getting to be too expensive! Also, as soon as I try to have the "christmas spirit" someone in the family has to complain about traditions being broken or Christmas being taken over. Times change....people change. I will try to keep as many traditions as possible but when it ends up screwing up things for me and my family is it worth it? I think Christmas would be a lot better if others weren't so bent on having it their way.

I can tell you when I lost it....when Christmas season began before Halloween. The retail market has forced Christmas on me since the end of October. By this time, we are all worn out on looking at Christmas trees, Christmas commercials on television, Christmas gift ideas in magazines and newspapers. It's all about marketing now, and we are literally bombarded with it for almost 3 months out of the year. That is 1/4 of the entire year! By December 1st, I am burned out with all of it. It's unfortunate, as Christmas and the holiday season isn't about retail sales or advertising...it should be about family, giving of ourselves, having fun in the snow.

well i havent lost it yet, & dont think it's ever gonna change. im 27 already but i still have the same child-like enthusiasm in anticipating Christmas.
i maybe not be able to carry it's spirit the whole year through(due to a lot of work-related, relationships- stress), but it's nice to know, there is a Christmas to look forward to at the end of the year. it somehow renews me all the time, making me look forward for another year to come, regardless of it's uncertainty.
Knowing that Christmas is constant & is coming again next year.
Advance Merry Christmas to you!

When I started seeing christmas decorations in the stores the day after Thanksgiving. Too much hype about gift giving and the real reason why we celebrate the holiday
