My nine month old has learned to stand in the crib. I don't mind that he stands, but when it's night-night time he needs to sleep. We have a regular morning routine and today it's nearly an hour off. I don't mind that it's off, but I know he has to sleep...otherwise, he gets incrediably hard to manage.

He starts off playing then doesn't know how to get down. I go and lay him back down and he starts crying.

How do I get him to stay laying down?
Do I keep going in to lay him down?

My mom says to smack his leg, but I really don't like the idea of smacking him when he's learned a new trick.

i would not lower his rail like someone suggested. if it is lower, he will be able to climb out easier. we have a 19month old and he gets milk and a cuddles before bed and then he goes to his crib. he is usually still awake. then sometimes he'll lay down and right to sleep, sometimes no. i don't go in there that often unless he is crying hard, (like he's hurting) or if he's playing too loud for too long. so like after 30 min. i hear him jumping on the bed i go in and tell him it's bedtime, i lay him down, put his covers on and pat his back for just a min or two (not until he's asleep) he will usually get himself to sleep without all that though. i wouldn't swat him for that. i only swat if he is doing something that is putting him in danger and telling him no did not work. him staying awake is only an inconvience but will not actually hurt him.

No smacking! He's learned something new & is doing what he needs to do (practicing standing). Also, he is probably showing off a bit for you. The timing isn't great at night, but it is just a stage, once the newness wears off, he will think sleeping when he's tired is a lot better than standing up! Staying up at night could happen again when he learns other new things (talking, walking etc)

Your mom sounds like a weirdo
Don't smack the baby on the leg he is just having fun he obviously like's what he is doing he will eventually lay down and go to sleep just like he learned how to stand up in the crib. Just shut the door and let him do his thing you will be surprized

My boys learned to get out of their cribs not long after 9 mths when they both started walking. The only thing you can do is lower the rail of the crib if possible so if he falls out (and he will) he wont have far to drop. Also make sure there's no toys or sharp thing he can fall onto to. Smacking wont help as this is your boy growing up and learning mobility. Sorry to say his crib is now for sleep only not a play pen like it used to be. Good luck.

There's no need to smack a 9 month old baby! I also wouldn't suggest going in the room and laying him back down each time. He will turn this into a game and you will both be cranky and exhausted. Turn his lights down, give him his blanket or teddy bear, or whatever he uses to sleep with, kiss him goodnight and let him be. He will cry for a while, but he will go to sleep. You are his mom and you know the difference between a destress cry and a cry for attention. You will also know when you need to go in and check on him. Good luck to you. It will be hard to listen to your baby cry at first, but unless he's wet or hungry, it won't hurt him.

Let him cry for about 5-10 minutes, then go in and lay him down and tell him it's sleepy time. Then wait another 10-15 minutes and do the same thing until he is tired. Show him how to sit down, don't just lay him back down, have him sit, then lay down. Don't worry this is totally normal, but so alarming when it's starts to happen, especially when they don't know how to sit themselves back down. My son is almost 10 months, and has just passed this phase. Fun isn't it ?

New tricks are always accompanied by a temporary change in sleep patterns.

Let him stand.. Lay him down occasionally, and if he gets back up it's ok..

at 9 months, a little bit of cry it out is ok..

and for GODS sake don't smack him.. Ever.

He will figure out how to lay down on his own. It will just take some time. You need to just let him do it. He gets upset because he thinks that you coming in there to lay him down is his winning sign. That is why you need to just let him be. He will figure it out when he is standing in his crib talking to himself and nobody cares. That is the only way. Good luck

Don't smack him, he is just doing what babies do...

He will learn sooner than not how to get down...it is agony for you but you just have to let him do it..

There is no way to "make" him stay laying down...

When babies get mobile, their schedules change slightly...you may find he sleeps less now that he can move around more...

Just let him cry!...I know its hard, but it works! He'll eventually learn that you aren't going to come in there and he'll start going to bed on time!.. And don't let him sleep late no matter how late he keeps himself up!-- It might be easier to get him to go down at night of he's tired!

Don't smack his leg :( ... You don't want to discourage him from standing and walking!
