I write almost exactly like I talk--a redneck girl with a brain, who knows some big words. Ignore the ignorance and be proud of who you are. Lots of amazing writers and artists came from the South!

That's really funny because I felt as if I did write the same as I spoke. I'm originally from CT so, of course, I don't think I have any kind of accent or noticeable regional dialect (I'm sure some people may think I do) If I do, it's nothing I could easily put into writing. I don't use words like a'int or y'all so I've never been in that situation. The only thing I could do is to write words like I pronounce them but they would just be misspelled. I could write 'rilly' instead of 'really' but it's actually hard to purposely misspell words all the time.
I equated twangy with stupid only because that's the way it is in the media. Seriously, that's the only reason. I know it's not actually true. People shouldn't write in accents and should avoid using lesser known 'regional speak' because few people are going to understand what they wrote. Obviously, email and messaging, etc. is a different story.

It depends on what I am writing. If I'm writing something scholarly, then I don't write the way I normally speak. If I am writing a letter to a friend or a less formal blog, then I "write how I talk." I think that the way you speak depends on the formality of the situation. I CERTAINLY don't use formal English all the time. You should be proud of your accent/dialect. I think accents and dialects are interesting.

I'm from Atlanta so yes, my grammar is completely different when I write as opposed to when I speak. I have a Southern accent too so I sometimes get the dumb look for non-Southerners but I deal with it..lol.

I am like you. Although I do express myself well when I speak, I have an accent, it is a Floridian Southern accent. Yes some people have expected me to be stupid because of it.
