My man wants to buy me pearls for christmas. How do i know which are the best quality? And where is the best place to shop for them. We live in Canada near Vancouver.

If you just want a quick reference, pearls are graded on a letter scale. AAA+ is the best you can buy. The more "A" in the gem grading, the better the pearls.

As for a place to buy them from, always avoid retail stores if possible. They are overpriced with a ridiculous markup. Try on line wholesalers, places that sell direct from manufactures, and other discount stores. EBay is my personal favorite for jewelry. Many jewelers have a store on there, so you aren't paying any other costs but theirs, plus a small profit for them. No mark ups, and no additional seller and supplier fees.

I don't know where to buy pearls in Canada, but I have heard that Mikimoto pearls are the best quality.

I got really nice pearl earrings from eBay.
Did you know that you can tell if they are real pearls by rubbing them against your teeth..if they feel rough they're real and if smooth they're false!
