I think the gf/bf could have been more stronger towards her feeling about each other and they should not have let the marriage go on.

Society influences our lives daily. For westerns its not a big thing but for people in india its a huge thing. Remarkably in the indian cultures many people sadly live for the society some knowingly, others unknowingly. Their practices of arranged marriages still goes on even forcingly and society is a main reason to blame for this.

If you have heard of the tragedy of Crown Prince Dipendra of Nepal you may realize how serious they are.
Quick blog of the story/It really happended.
Prince was in love with a girl whom his family rejected strongly so he took his life with the 7 others in his kingdom including his parents.

Love is a strong bond and is serious among young individuals in india. But parents hold a strong No against it. Its partilly the cultures', caste systems, wealth, prestige developed among the society that is to blame too.

Indian society are very strict with casta and everything. Even women have to give dowry to the man. I blame the system..Women in India have nothing. I once heard/read about a girl that cancelled her own wedding because the bridegroom parents were asking too much money and she calls the police. I was shocked to discover that the girl's family was giving the groom's family lots of electrical stuff that are so expensive. I felt sorry for the girl, maybe that is what happens to the girl.Maybe the groom is try to blackmail/kill her.Who knows??

Was it an arranged marriage?

I would say that the individual should take responsiblility for her own actions, but if she is being forced to marry someone, then her parents are partially to blame as well.

In a culture in which forced arranged marriages are allowed these things are more likely to happen. Did the girl choose to marry this man or was it her parents that pressured/forced her to marry him?

Both individuals ... and society as well are responsible for all that nonsense that is happening around.
Parents are just part of society and therefore forcing of parents is just the reflection of that.....
