the sides are 1, 1 and the hypotenuse is the square root of 2. so cos 45 = 1/(2)^1/2

The ratio of the hypotenuse to each of the other two sides is sqrt(2). That's because if x is the length of each side opposite a 45° angle, Pythagoreas tell us that the length of the hypotenuse is sqrt (x^2 + x^2) = sqrt(2x^2) = x* sqrt(2).
