ah yes..., I remember the good ol' days when Ron and I would clown around..., well.., Ron, anyway.., and he would spare no expense in treating friends to expensive meals at Shey-Le-McDonoolds in France..., insisting the Big Macs were his treat. Jokester as he was, he stiffed us with the bill..., ah.., good times!

In the early years before his fame took him over, there was the time I went with him on drive-along as he was on clown patrol, looking for criminal clowns (giving good decent fast-food restaurant clowns a bad name) at every circus. On this one patrol we saw this suspicious clown lurking around the circus grounds, peeping in the Bearded Lady's dressing room. We busted Bozo big time! His side-kick, Butch tried to render Bozo, assistance but I took Butch down with water-balloon to the cranium., knocked him cold! ..., ah..., good times.

So yeah, Ronald McDonald was a good joe.., er.., guy.., clown.., whatever. and no, he was not gay! Those rumors started because someone misconstrued his giving mouth to mouth resuscitation to Claribel the Clown after he failed to float on water with a cinder b lock tied to his ankle . Claribel (a male clown) was gay.., he and Howdy Doody had a thing going, or so that was the rumor.., but you did not hear that from me.

DISCLAIMER:
No clown was killed, maimed or too badly injured in this sad parodied account.

Oh and there is the thing where he helps out the poor, and needy, so yeah - you could say he was a nice guy. A good guy.

Have you ever heard of the Ronald McDonald House?
It's looks like a really nice home in an upscale neighborhood with gardens and playgrounds. It's beautiful. Inside, it's designed with rooms much like a hotel. The diffence is, that only the bedrooms are hotel like. Everything else is communal. Huge kitchens, laundry room, game room, computer room, movie theatre, huge living rooms, libraries and playrooms are around every corner. Everywhere you go; smiling faces introducing themselves. "Hi! I'm Ann and this in my husband, Carl and our two children Sam and Karen. We're from Oklahoma." You exchange your own family information. Then you look at each other's children to see if you can figure out which one is sick. Sam is bald, obviously from chemo and radiation, and is extremely pale with those dark circles under his eyes. He's laugh and playing like he doesn't have a care in the world. He goes in to the hospital for another operation. It's his 4th operation since he was born. He's 4 yrs old. This may be his last one, not because he will be cured, but because they can't do anything else to help him. They don't even know if he'll survive the surgery, but they are hopeful. You share your own story. You exchange those looks that say everything you are afraid to say out loud. And you meet another family from Texas and one from Oregon and there's one from Florida.
Then you join in the family style dinner and watch movies curled up in front of the tv surrounded by perfect strangers that, after this week, you probably will never see again. You somehow feel so connected to these people. They understand. It's bed and bath time. It's going to be a long day tomorrow. There are joyous, tearful good byes in the lobby. A family is going home...with a healthy child. They leave behind things they won't be needing, but someone else might. They left some bubble bath for the kids and some new magazines for the adults. Nothing big, but so sweet. The children love their bubble baths and forget just for a little while what tomorrow has in stored. More tests, more needles, more questions. Another family is moving in. Wow! They've got 6 kids. Dad can't stay. He has to work to pay the bills, but it will be o.k. Mom will have lots of help from everyone here at the Ronald McDonald House. We'll make sure they have a ride to the hospital, someone will go pick up diapers for the baby, and help her get settled in. "Can we go see him, Mom? Can we?" They race outside to climb all over the life sized statue sitting on the bench in the garden with his arm outstretched to comfort anyone in need. "He's so cool!" The parents pass another look. Yeah he is.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a place to sleep, laundry facilities, entertainment, 3 meals a day and all the snacks you could want, a library, computer use, phone use, playgrounds and gardens. All for free to families of sick and dying children. They don't care what your race, creed, color, religion or financial statis is. They help everyone. Without their help, many families would have no where to go during these times. They couldn't be close to their children. They couldn't stay together when it counts the most.
Is Ronald McDonald a nice guy?
You go to any Ronald McDonald House in the country ask around. See what they have to say about it.

Oddly enough, when I worked at a music theater that did kids matinee shows and McDonalds was the sponsor, I sat on the curb outside and had a cigarette with him. Very surreal experience, I can tell you that.......
