The ducks I've seen don't even migrate. I guess geese are the only ones who migrate for the winter.

I live in northern Canada and here, the ducks and loons all fly south but return the next year. I have many squirrels and chipmunks etc. and they all return to their boroughs in the ground which they have stocked with various food items(nuts and the like) throughout the summer and early fall. I also have several beaver lodges on my lake and they stay in their dens (like a bear) for the winter assthe lake freezes, but they do keep a hole in the ice open for ingress and egress.

they all get together and as a group go on one of those coaches that drive down to dover, onto the ferry or train and then scoot on down to south france or spain. Its quite low budget but they seem to like it. The squirrels especially like to kick back next to the pool and let someone else bring them the nuts for a change!

They all have adapted to create shelter that will protect them. However, animals can and do perish if the cold becomes too severe, especially the aged ones, just like human beings.
