My Mother was born in Germany and moved to the states when she was five. From that point on she she was encouraged and has only spoken English. She can look at something and sort of tell you what it means and can understand a good portion of the language, but it takes her a bit.

However, if you put her back in Germany where others are speaking it constantly, she will just jump right in and it is like she never left.

So I would say there are factors that would have to be involved such as how long you knew the intitial language, how long it has been since you used it and who you are as a person. Some people have better long term memories then others. However, yes, fluency will be lost with time.

I know that is sort of a round about answer, but there are a lot of other factors involved!

Absolutely, as Dr. Ruth has said, "If you don't Use It, You Will Loose It'" -- I did, I was fluent in Italian, and now only a few words, but I still understand! Is that what is happening to you? Then it is quite normal, relax and take a refresher course in your "mother tongue".. you can even get the learning skills at the "Library" for just a $5.00 membership. I never did it, because I marriage a Canadian, and now I have learnt Spanish, as it is the #1 Spoken Language in the World, English is now 2nd!
