I don't want to sound ungrateful, but little candles and ornaments really add up to a bunch of unused "stuff" after awhile. I have really enjoyed receiving gift cards best. I can really use them! Teachers generally drink coffee (Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks, Caribou) or visit restaurants (Chili's, Olive Garden, Baker's Square), or shop for books (Borders, Barnes and Noble). One family gave me a Blockbuster's card with some microwave popcorn. Now that kind of gift doesn't collect dust!

P.S. Thanks for thinking of your teachers during the holidays!

Most teachers spend their own money for supplies. The best idea is to get them a box of supplies appropriate to the age group they teach. Add to the box a sweet card and a small token like a zipper pull she can put on her coat, perhaps an angel. I saw those last night at WalMart and though for $3 that they would make good "in the card" gifts.

Thank you for saying the teachers have been good to the kids. Teachers are unsung hero's!

As a teacher, I like to receive practical items like pretty ceramic pencil holders or notepads. You could add your sentiments of appreciation on a card that your children have created. Those are the things that I keep forever.
I don't get many gifts in the high school here, but when I do, it means so much.

GIFT CARDS! for a store, restaurant, gas almost anything. The teacher or secretary can pick out what they want. And believe it or not, I loved just getting a homemade card from one of my students. It's now an ornament on my tree. I loved getting cards or anything the students made.

A personal note of appreciation is a great gift. When I get them, I tape them to the inside of a folder and when I get that, "WHY AM I HERE?" feeling, I open my folder of positive notes.
Another great gift is a favorite book to add to the class library, or even the school library with a nice dedication written in it.
other suggestions

plant for the classroom
journal notebooks
gift cards to fast food places, book stores
a lapel pin
cute post it notes (never have enough of those!)
a picture of your student

How bout a gift certificate to a GOOD local restaurant?
Definitely not notecards, any kind of kitschy little knick knack or perfume or any of the stuff they will have to put away in a drawer and their kids will throw it away still in the original wrapper after they die, like I did with all my mom's 40 years of presents.

It's very sweet that you're thinking of them. :) As a teacher, I'm not a fan of "teacherish" stuff. Apples are out for me. A scented candle or book to add to the classroom library are always safe and thoughtful. One of my student's parents bought a small 3-piece nativity set for me, and I LOVE it. I would have never thought to get one for myself, so it was neat that someone else got it for me.

Gift cards are always good. An excellent choice is to donate a nice hardback copy of your child's favorite book to her classroom library. We have to purchase our own supplies also, so anything like that would be nice.
