When it was bought for me last year it had lots of lovely flowers on. When they fell off, I did what the instructions said and cut the stem above an eye. Since then, the stem looks like a stick and no flowers this year, but the leaves are growing and healthy and a new one has appeared. Will it ever pick up again?

Jordan - thanks, but do I need to remove the old stem now or leave it?

Sounds like you are doing everything right so far. The indicator for that is that the leaves are still green and healthy. Orchids in general are very slow bloomers. If you get a set of blooms twice a year you are lucky. You will not get more flowers off the original stem, however you will get a new stem forming in the base of the leaves. You may want to fertilize with an orchid fertilizer to give it a boost. Patience is the key with orchids!

Don't worry, you'll see blooms again.Someday,If your lucky. (Not really) No, in reality you will have blooms again. I cut mine all the way off.I didn't know. That was two years ago. It's growing a new one now. Actually,I have about eight orchids growing new stems,or sticks, Don't cut the other one off, it will probably grow new flowers from there.W hen you cut a flower stem, remember, cut it from just above where the FIRST-flower bloomed. If it doesn't flower again, wait till it turns brown, than you cut it as close to the base as possible. When you water, (usually once a week) soak them in the sink, or tub, with only warm water, all the way to the rim of their pots, for fifteen min.Make sure you use water that is warm to the touch. Also use a good orchid food. Any where from 1/2 to 3/4 the amount the directions state. You won't have to guess how much fertiliser which one gets, or how much at what times. Also, if you have it next to a window, don't let the leaves touch the glass. They don't like that, and be sure to use a paper towel,to soak up any water that's sitting down in where the leaves start. That causes root rot. Have fun, take a picture when it's in bloom again o.k.? I'd like to see it.Oh, I have 32 orchids!

Yes. Avoid drafts . Put in sunnest window and feed every three months or less. You can feed every six weeks with just a little less than you would ordinarily. Make sure you keep soil just moist. I am in New Jersey and if it proves to be as grey as usuall I will get the two I have a light. Good Luck and isen't it amazing how long the Flowers last.
