Does anyone know who determines the names of hurricanes and typhoons and such?

It's listed on the site of the National Hurricane Center. I don't live in the US myself, so I was wondering why hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons have only english names, though they effect more countries.

that would be the World Meteorological Organization

the WMO is a UN agency based in Switzerland

had to look up the details out of curiosity - they keep a names list ready for the next six years worth of storms and when a storm is severe enough they retire that name ( that means no more Katrina ever and since it is a UN agency explains some of the non-English sounding names ( like Katrina ) )

and since you will be getting answers like NOAA and National Hurricane Center you might want to check yourself cause both sites specifically state that they do not name storms - lol

i do know they are made up in advance
and that they are alphabetical through the season.
so abby would come before henry which is before zelda.
several years ago they changed the names to include both sexes.
before that hurricanes only had one gender.

What I know is that their names are given by the countries affected, but a separate international name is also assigned.

They are made up before hand now in two genders in alphabetical orders. Hence Bob before Zelda and Zelda before Zena. or Abby before Xander before Yannie
