Look for tricks. It the clue a 'plural'? That will [often] give you an "s" at the end. Or is the clue past tense? That might give you and "ed".
Abbrieviated clues usually mean an abbreviated answer.
There's all kinds of tricks and the more crosswords you do the better you will get.
Hope that helps. Good luck!

For pretty simple puzzles I will just go down all of the Across words first & then do the Down words next . Then, I go through all of it the same way a second time. But if I try to do especially difficult crosswords in this way, my mind gets too tired by the end. On one that seems really tricky, I usually start with just the first 5-10 Across words, then skip over & start just the first 5-10 Down words, then go back to whichever of the 5-10 Across words I didn't get on the first try, and so on, only working on small sections of the puzzle at one time. Usually doing a tricky crossword in this 'boxed' sort of way, keeps my mind on focused on only the same few clues at the same time, and I get more of it solved, than if I try it the other usual way.
