At least 6-8 wks. You should not be walking on it without some type of support. The more you use it the longer it will take to heal plus you could do more damage.

A sprain is a tearing of the ligaments around your ankle. If not allowed to heal they will never regain full strength as ligaments have poor healing capabilities. I have sprained my ankles (2 out of the 4) and on both occasions it took about 4 weeks for the major sprains and 2 weeks for a minor sprain (sprained one ankle twice). Even after they have healed they will still be weaker so take more care of them.
In order to facilitate faster healing you should keep the ankle wrapped, keep ice on it and keep it propped up. Do not try to walk long distances (or just get crutches) and do NOT try to jog on it. If it is minor and you keep it iced, propped up and wrapped you should be ok in about a week or two. However if you walk around on it, jog with it, don't wrap it, etc it will not only take longer but will not heal as well.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

First of all you should see a physician....but it can take 4-6 weeks or more for a sprained ankle to heal...sometimes a sprain is worse than a break!!! Get to a doctor and STOP jogging on it...

Ice and compression are your friends. give it a 24 to 48 hour rest, icing for 20 minutes 3-4 times a day then make sure it is supported (with compression) if you do any activity. Always Ice after any activity as well. If it is a mild sprain (as you've described) the swelling and pain will more than likely be gone in a week, BUT you've weaked the joint with the sprain and you need to strengthen the joint before you start strenuous activity again. Use stretching exercises with elastic bands and balance exercises to strengthen the joint. You may need to use compression support for several weeks to prevent reinjury.

Weeks. In fact sprains will never heal if you don't let them. The sprained joint needs to be supported (stiff boots help) and it needs ice, rest, and anti-inflammatory medications. It's not wise to push it - give it 6 weeks to heal at least.
