ZoneAlarm is absolutely safe. Millions use it.

To access port settings, the paid version of ZoneAlarm can do that. The free edition can't, though.

ZoneAlarm keeps people from accessing your computer that you don't want.

You have lots of programs on your computer that communicate with the internet on a daily basis. They do this without your knowledge. Some harmless, some not so harmless. ZoneAlarm knows when they're trying to access the internet, and asks you if it's ok that they do this. You can accept or deny them. If you want to make the decision permanent, you can click the box to "always do this from now on"

It doesn't give you a virus.

I have used ZoneAlarm for about 6 years now and I love it. I have used both the free and paid versions, and both seem to work very well, with the paid version offering a little more user control.

It will be a bit of a nuisance the first few times you use it, because it will ask if every program trying to access the Internet has your permission to do so, but once you let it know which programs you want to allow access, it performs well.

Zonealarm is a very good firewall, but in order to get the best of it, you have to customize it. A good way of doing this is to create the list of the programs that you want to open a port and access the outside world, don't open everything.

Then, limit the ports that are opened to only those ones that are used by your system. Here's a port list by IANA:

Remember, your firewall is only as good as your configuration.

Well, ZoneAlarm is easy to use... however if you are looking for something that will allow you to customize your settings more look at either the Sygate Personal Firewall, http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160 or the Comodo Firewall, http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

I can't reccomend the free version of Zone Alarm but that's just my personal opinion, it is easy to use but it doesn't offer much in the way of advanced configuration. Both Sygate and Comodo offer both simple, advanced and something in between that so depending on your level of knowledge, you can just use them. Zone Alarm only offers a relatively simple mode.

It is very widely used and doesn't give you virus. It is safe to use.
The benefits are it's free and doesn't slow your machine down as much as the commercial packages from the big vendors.

Yes, I find it quite safe in fact. It is one of the best and is highly rated by the so-called "experts". There are several versions, but if you get the "Suite". it contains everything. No virus at all.
