First you must realize that I am a Christian and EVEN IF it was a 'mean trick' only the person who gave it needs to know. I would accept it with sincere gratitude. Such a gift can be given to a group sending articles overseas to the needy. Only GOD knows what is in a person's heart and only HE is to judge each and every person on Earth... and HE will. It would be my hope that I could in some way help that person also see the good in others so that he/she would share with others as he/she is prospered. I received a $100 grocery certificate at work several years in a row. My wife and I never used them. I always gave them to someone who came to me during that season that had need of it. GOD is truly a lifesaver in our lives. Have a great Holiday Season and share with those around you. It pays great dividends not only to them but to those around them!

why would they waste their money doing that? Perhaps they didn't realise the phone would not work.

If they knew it didn't work, then I think that is just f**king rude, and would tell them so.
