the problem is that the dvd disc i want to copy to is not large enough to - it only takes 72 mins. Is there a program which would enable me to "resize" the film (wich is 127 mins) to fit onto my disc?

Yes there is !
it is called "DVDshrink" , it is easy to use and shrinks DVD's to about 4.4GB , ready to be burnt.
But it only works on DVD's, as you say it is too big, I assume it is a ripped DVD.
If it is avi , then you should use DivxtoDVD or convertxtoDVD both from www.vso-software.com

Try Virtual DUB, however i must say i hope that this film you have downloaded is not an illegal Download from any P2P network systems or torrent systems as you are in breach of the copy right law.

I recommend Nero Recode. It is included as part of the Nero 7 Suite of applications.

what format is the film in, if it is mpeg or avi then it wont work unless you convert it first. if it is from universal you can try to shrink it with DVDshrink (just google) but it may have protection, then you will need dvddecrypter (google again) both those programmes are3 free
