There are many prices of showers, the same for the fixtures. If you have a tub and want a shower you can buy the shower fixture and a surround that goes on the wall. The surround would be cheaper than a shower too. Also you may not need a whole new fixture, some have a plug on them and all you do is take that off, screw in an adapter and solder 1/2" copper tubing to it. If you don't feel comfortable doing that just bu PVC. Make sure if you decide to go with a surround you get a good one, if you don't when the glue behind it dries it will wrinkle yur shower surround. If you have any further questions or need help send me you email address and I will help you all I can.

Like anything else, you get what you pay for. I'm a penny pincher on a tight budget, so I just got one of those tub faucets with an attachment for a sprayer and mounted the sprayer head to the wall with a hook and got a tension rod for the curtain. It came with a bonus; it's great for bathing kids and pets. Just make sure the wall can stand the extra water. If not, you'll have to rig a shower curtain to go around the tub. Of course you could go the distance and get the plumbing in the wall changed, buy new faucets, and get a surround put in, but that's a tad more expensive ;)
Good luck to you
