the word motel came from combining the words 'motor' and 'hotel'. the difference is a motel, you park your car by the room you rented, motels spread out on the ground floor. Hotels are usually several stories high, and usually located in cities, and you park somewhere else. motels can be anywhere along the highway, usually outside city limits, but not always.

The difference is becoming obscure. Used to be a motel (MOtor hoTEL) was a few rooms all in a row, or a few separate "cottages," with a private entrance from the outside to each room, parking outside next to the door, and located on a scenic rural highway. Hotels were usually high-rise buildings with hundreds of rooms located in the downtown area of a major city with room access through a common hallway on each floor and inconvenient parking. Both still exist, but motels are beginning to look a lot like hotels and both can be found anywhere, not just in the downtown area of a large city or on some backwoods highway. And major hotels now offer convenient off-street parking garages. Most motels now offer some form of "room service" like hotels always have done, but the service is more limited.

BE CAREFUL: here in Brazil Motel and Hotel are very different. Hotel is the place where you stay when you are out of your house.
Motel is the place you go with a partner to have sexual relation. Generally you must pay when you are going out according the time you remained inside of the motel. Did you understand? Is my English correct?

motel is a hotel providing travelers with lodging and free parking facilities, typically a roadside hotel having rooms adjacent to an outside parking area or an urban hotel offering parking within the building.
A hotel is a commercial establishment offering lodging to travelers and sometimes to permanent residents, and often having restaurants, meeting rooms, stores, etc., that are available to the general public.

Bottomline is a Motel is cheaper, accessible cause its usually found in highways. While a Hotel cost a lot more because of the amenities it offers its clients like restaurant, convenience store, gym and etc.

The origin of "Motel" was Motor Inn, primarily for those travelers, who had little time or desire to hunt for Hotels, in inner cities, or places off their path, in the moment.

A Ho-tell is where the Ho's go...haa haa...just joking. The "Mo" part in motel stands for Motor, as its the type of lodging where you park right in front of your room. A hotel is the type thats like an apartment building.
