If so, why is it used to evalutate cancer when radiation can cause cancer?

Depends on what they are trying to see. Sometimes they inject radioactive isotopes to get a better image. The MRI itself does not use radiation, it uses magnetic fields.

An MRI does not involve radiation at all. MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging and indeed the body is placed between magnetics. The magnets are turned 'on' and then 'off'. Electrons are pulled out of orbit and then 'bounce' back into orbit releasing 'energy'. This change in energy is sensed by a computer which is able to produce extraordinarily clear images. If you have cancer I am sorry to hear that but hopefully your question was just a matter of curiosity.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive procedure that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to construct pictures of the body. There is no ionizing radiation involved in MRI, and there have been no documented significant side effects of the magnetic fields and radio waves used on the human body to date.
Please see the web pages for more details on MRI.

The radiation used in medicine rarely causes cancer - and the doses you experience in everyday life are far greater - your own body contains radioactive potassium.
MRIs are not the same as an x-ray - they use a magnet to create an image - not an x-ray - does not produce radiation
