If I bought my own geiger counter, or is that necessary, would somebody officially double check my results and if they came up positive would my property be condemned or cleaned up? Who would pay for such a thing?

If you had symtoms of radiation poisoning the hospital would contact FEMA. The tax payers would pay for the cost of condemning the property (fences, etc) initially, then whoever was responsible for the problem, but it would be taken care of right away. While they would clean it up I believe the property would not longer be habitable.

I don't recall anything like this happening in the US since the 70's, but researching 3 mile island should answer your questions as to what occurs after the fact.

If it's your property that's contaminated, why in the world would somebody besides you pay to clean it up? If I were you, I'd keep quiet because what will probably happen is that they'll condemn it, clean it up, then send you the bill. That is of course unless you believe the contamination came from somewhere else, such as a nearby nuclear power plant.

And what reasons do you have to suspect contamination?

If there is no real reason to suspect contamination and your own survey indicates no contamination - why should we waste taxpayer money to check?
