I mean i presume that the actual vehicle can go at a normal speed?

Snorestore, i DO cross myself when i see a hearse carrying a coffin (as a blessing to the dead)

It's tradition. In the old days before cars people used to walk along with the coffin. The slow dignified pace was in keeping with the event.

Either that or it's to save them the paperwork if they go at speed over a big bump in the road and the corpes sits up and says 'what the **** is going on now?!'

They don't always. Round here they tend to keep up with the traffic.

Respect and dignity aside, traditional funerals had to be at walking pace because most of the mourners were on foot.

I think the family would look undignified legging it down the road behind the hearse if it went any faster. maybe they get paid by the hour.

Yes, it's out of respect. In the olden days people used to doff their hats or cross themselves but this rarely happens now.

Hmmm, I wonder too, perhaps cos the family knows that it would be the dead's last ride & they want it to go as slowly as possible to delay final goodbyes?
