Why don't you both just save the money, don't buy each other presents, just spend xmas together and enjoy it. (why have you got to show his mum- that's weird!)

How about $20 gift cards to each of your favorite restaurants--- Choose 2 different places---- That way you can treat each other out for the holidays 2 x----

Pool the $20 to make $40---- a night in a cheap motel LOL

Pool the $20 to make $40---- make a romantic dinner for 2 and use the money for the food---$40 can buy even cheap candles for the table---

I think his mum is wrong. You're obviously of adult age to pass a driving test and buy a car, therefore you should be able to be incontrol of your own finances and spend what you want.

If you havent got a lot of money then £20 is a good amount to set to spend on each other, but it shouldnt be down to someone else to tell you what to spend. Control freak!

Try DVD's, books, games that you could play together, clothes (t-shirts maybe), music. That kind of thing.

Why have you got to show the receipts to his mum is she subsidising you both, that would worry me. Anyway there are loads of things you could buy with £20.00 put your money together and get some tickets for the local pantomine that would be a laugh, some of them are very good. If you get two tickets at least you would not have his mum with you.

I've found a new way to celebrate christmas on a budget and do good for others to.
Log onto Oxfam.com and there are loads of wicked gift ideas. I bought my bessie mate a goat for christmas, it will be given to a family in Malawi and the first kid the goat has gets passed onto another family.

I think that's a great idea and his mum is very sensible.

You should check out the online DVD shops like Pay - you can get lots of DVDs for £20.

What's it got to do with his mum. Whatever you buy each other will be fine. It's just a token after all. I would be more worried about living with a bloke who has to show receipts to his mum!
