Really, any sudden action or loud noise can be said to be scary when in fact most of the time you are more startled then scared except in a few cases. I think the word is used a lot and we condition ourselves that when we hear it we are to be ready to be afraid. BOO!

hehehe, its not scary at all, if someone jumps out from behind something down a scary dark street or in a spooky old house and screams BOO it would frighten the life out of me, but not beacuse the word is scary, just beacuse im a big wuss!! :D

It's not the word - it's the way it's said, how loud it is, and how much of a surprise hearing it is. It's just something nonsensical to say when trying to surprise someone.
