It depends on your interpretation of the term. Being Christian does not mean you actually follow all the teachings of Christ. Italian gangsters consider themselves to be Christian, as does pedophile church leaders, priests, nuns, etc.
Many Christians believe that once saved, always saved, like Jesse Jackson, who kept an ongoing adulterous affair, and even having a child. Also, pedophiles, whether they are religious leaders or not.
Being Christian has not meant actually living the life of Christ in close to 1900 years. Even in the time of Paul, people began drifting back to many of their old ways, which frustrated the Apostle Paul.
So properly, your question should be: "How do People maintain living the life of Christ?" As far as this being a warped world, that has also not changed much in the last 1900 years. People, including church leaders, have always been doing things not in keeping with the teachings of Christ. Consider the crusades, burning of witches, selling of the Red Hats by the early church, and other numerous things.
The only difference today is that it is more open.

If you are truly born again, then there is no conscious effort that needs to be applied. I assume that you are referring to temptation and how to avoid it. The simple answer is to stay away from those areas and people that promote sin. To be born again means to be called out and separated from the world and worldly things. The first and most important thing that you should do is get rid of the TV----there is no good in it. Secondly, stop reading newspapers. All news is negative----negative drives the media and is counter-productive to proper Christian living. Read Philippians chapter 4 and Romans chapter 8 for some good guidelines in Christian living and thinking. And in all things, trust Jesus---never try to do anything along; always include Christ in your plans. In John 15:5, Jesus says: ....."without me ye can do nothing." Jesus loves you and wants you to be successful and to grow spiritually.

In wa y, it is hard to be a Christian. We're tested daily, by the choices we're given, by our feelings, our friends, loved ones and strangers. If we say something is wrong, we're intolerant. If we say one thing is right over the other, we're judgmental.
By becoming a Christian, we become targets. Setting our sights above, we grasp the larger picture: forgiveness of sins, salvation, eternal life. In the long run, it's never easy, but it's worth it.

Hi
It is not hard to stay a Christian when you don't try too hard :)
Be kind yourself when you make mistake. Know that it is wrong and turn to God for help. Keep on turning to Him again and again. I think most of us will be in such cycle till be are 6 feet under :)

They completely suspend logic and rational thinking and rely only on blind faith-I've tried to do it but I can never quite manage it because I'm too much of a pragmatist.

yes, I hear you. It is hard - but no different from early Bible times, really.
Got to stay connected to the Power - and it's all about faith and His grace and strength.
