you are the parent he is still child set boundaries enforce them my son will be 14 in Feb but 10 is lights out and on wk-ends is his time but if you have to unscrew light bulbs and unplug every thing in room do it your helping him in long run its tough being a single parent but if you don't take control now he will run over you in a couple of years plus it prepares him for real world when he has to follow rules and regulations

He may have been through a lot, but as a Mother don't give in to feeling sorry for him. (Which is hard to do sometimes). Talk to him about ground rules, then if you can get him into after school activities, this way he may become more active and need the school.

Take time out to be with him, something for only the two of you. That way he may see that you are HUMAN and not just MOM. Giving you both the chance to communicate

You definitely do not want him to stay up at all hours of the night. And you most certainly do not want him doing as he pleases.

Ofcourse, he is old enough to stay up a little later than normal and even if you get him to bed at a reasonable hour, he might lay there awake and not get enough sleep.

I would think that you could probably sit down and explain how you feel and perhaps come to an agreement, just like adults do.

However, do not let him disobey you in any way. Let him know who is the boss. And don't be afraid to discipline him.

Instead of punishment that he will butt heads with you about, do a chart about what you expect of him. This way your both on the same page, less argueing. Teach him how to manage his time in a positive way. Yes, 14 yr olds still can work to reach self goals and get rewards from Mom.

Remind him that doing his best in school will prepare him for his adult life. If he dont get his sleep, he wont be able to do his best at school. Positive reinforcement with life lessons are a good thing.

No caffeine within 9 hours of bedtime. Caffeine takes 30 minutes to begin affecting the system (that jolt your get as you're drinking your morning coffee is a placebo affect caused by the body getting ready to receive its daily allotment of caffeine) and caffeine continues to affect the system for up to 8 hours. So first, no caffeine.

2nd: Get him up on time.

3rd: School work gets done before play.

4th: get him started on meditation exercises to clear his mind before he goes to bed. Convince him it's ninja training (it IS very Taoist). Too much excitement, too many thoughts, can cause insomnia in a 14 year old.

Also remember that this is a teenage boy: hormones can cause insomnia too. A lot of boys go through this, and please try to understand that this isn't an easy time biologically for a boy.

Sounds like your average 14 yr. old. You say he's been through allot. I think some counseling sounds like a great idea. And I admire you for taking such an interest in your boy. You're a good mom.

i am 14 and i stay up all night its usually because i am stalling so i dont have to go to school or am worried or just want to play games on the computer. Limit electronics after a certain time and talk to him about why he stays up. That's just me but i hope it helps

remove the tv and computer until he goes to bed at a regular sensible time. It doesn't take long for them to change.
