I watch Frontline, a news program on PBS, that shows pictures of troops who have died that day/week. They show the pictures in silence. Most of the troops are young, but there are a few in their 40s, and a good many in their 30s. I also wonder about the rich vs. poor.

Since most frontline troops are younger it would seem that way. But, remember that the old soldiers are the ones that came thru the stuff when they were that age and went up in rank. There is room for only so many sgts, and such at the front.

There are few old soldiers. It's not some secret scheme against stupid, young, poor boys. All types of people join the military for all kinds of reasons. Some people join the military even if they do not agree with the president. Some people feel it is their responsibility as able bodied young men to defend their nation and their families.

No. Old soldiers die too. They don't die as often because they're older, generally more mature, less impulsive, less likely to make mistakes, more observant: that's how they got to be old soldiers. But a bullet doesn't discriminate against age, gender, economic class, social status, rank, sexual preference or any other criteria, and even the best soldier can step on a mine, or take sniper fire, or get hit by shrapnel.

Recall that in the Civil War we lost 18 Generals in one battle. The man who fired the first cannon at Ft Sumpter was in his 70's. A little research will show that every war has had its share of old soldiers getting killed. You are correct in that war is for young people, though. I was in Laos squatting down in the tall grass to answer mother nature's call. As I stood up, this guy my age (18) with a rifle aimed at my head stood up next to me. "Click" His rifle misfired. He looked confused as I gently slid the SKS from his hands by the barrel. Then I baseball batted him to death with one stroke. I hop-ran 100 yards with my pants around my ankles and the broken barrel of his rifle in my hand. It was like being in a sack race for your life with bullets wizzing all around! THAT kinda gymnastics is for young people. And that's why it's mostly young people that do most of the fighting and dying. Just like any hard, physical, manual job. It takes the young bucks to stack the bricks and the old timers to show them how. But remember everybody is at risk. Now if you mean politicians as opposed to troops, well that's for another question.

"He was dismounted and organizing the soldiers around him. He had just finished guiding a battalion of Iraqi soldiers through the breach lane. As small arms fire burst out from two sides, CSM Faulkenburg issued fire commands to his gunner, and raced forward into the contact."

I knew this guy and had worked alongside him as the battle of Falluja was planned.

the older guys (like the NCO's, SNCO's) die to.

Fathers in thier 30's and 40's are dying just as young guys with so much ahead of them are.

Remember them all.
