I'd like the viewpoint of real Christians on this.

We all know that a married person having sex with someone not their spouse is adultery and so is lusting after someone in our hearts.

My question is, if I love someone who is not my spouse and I do not engage in any physical intimacy, is that also adultery?

Would really like God's full definition on "adultery".

Cohabiting without the benefit of marriage is living in fornication. Infidelity in marriage is still adultery.

‘Fornication’ in the broad sense, and as used at Matthew 5:32 and 19:9, evidently refers to a broad range of unlawful or illicit sex relations outside marriage. Porneia [the Greek word used in those texts] involves the grossly immoral use of the genital organ(s) of at least one human (whether in a natural or a perverted way); also, there must have been another party to the immorality—a human of either sex, or a beast.” (The Watchtower, March 15, 1983, page 30) Adultery: “Voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a partner other than the lawful husband or wife.”—The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language.

But why do you have such feelings other than your spouse? It is ok to love, friendly or brotherly love, God encourages us to do so. but love for a spouse should be exclusive.

If the "love" is lustful, then yes. According to Christ, if a man looks upon a woman with lust he has sinned.
A married man who is in love with someone other than his wife would appear to be in a sinful state. However, resisting temptation and repenting would be the keys to the problem. Repentance would require a change of heart/thinking.

For that, you'd have to apply directly to God.
Every other source is tainted by people's personal views, culutre, and political expediency. After all, it wasn't God who wrote down the 'Word of God' and whoever did, was not as trustworthy as God.

God is fine with adultery and incest as long as he approves it. Lot for instance, shagged both his daughters, yet he was a righteous man, we are told so often and emphatically!

Abraham, David, Solomon et al all had sexual relations with people other than their spouse, in some cases with God's actual abetting! Samson, that epitome of mighty godliness, went to prostitutes!

So although the bible does say 'Thou shalt not commit adultery,', that must be one of the fuzzy bits where god wasn't thinking too straight. Like most of the bible, come to think of it!
