My mum's mini-foxie dog can put his head underwater to retrieve things - usually food. We did a little experiment using a bit of food and a container of water to see if our other dogs could stick their head underwater to get the bit of food. None of them could except Duke. Even if there is a muddy puddle of water with something floating on the top, he has to get it out. Its soooo cute because little bubbles come out of his nose.

I should not have said that he puts his head underwater. He just puts his snout and sometimes his eyes go under as well. I totally agree with the info regarding ear infections.

Dogs can not see very well, but they have a very good nose to find objects better than we can. I guess he has a damn good nose. Normally dogs can not really smell within the water. But when it is floating they can smell it offcourse. But most of the dogs need a route of smells to trace the track the food has gone to. Your dog can smell from longer distances, your dog is not afraid of water (some dogs are), and he is not afraid to put his head into the water.

Be aware: It is very bad for a dog to have water in his ears!

My Lab would literally dive head first into a creek/pond/pool to retrieve. I taught him to do it by putting food into his water dish - usually something he couldn't resist - like "Mike&Ikes" candy! Then he did it one day when we were "exploring" a creek near our house and a frog jumped in front of us into the creek - he went right in after him! The look on his face when he came out was a riot - he was so surprised that he couldn't "smell" under water! He was a great explorer - he died this past summer...

Have fun!

Cute story.
Watch out for ear infections. Dogs tend to get these when there's water, hair, or dirt in their ears.
Not the smartest thing to let your dog do.

Any dog can do this, if inclined to do so. If you spent enough time coaxing the others, with really tasty treats that sink, they'd probably learn eventually too.

No. My dogs can't do that. Ozzy is to worried about messing up his fur, and Trooper could try but I could just see him drowning himself in the process!
