It has no effect on whether you win or lose. Using the players card is much like providing your frequent flyer card when you buy a plane ticket. It has no effect on whether your plane will arrive on time or the care with which your bags will be handled. It is basically a loyalty card, the purpose of which is to encourage you to use them instead of a competitor. When you accumulate points with one program, you tend to stay with that same program so that you can gain incentive rewards.
As far as the casino is concerned, offering a players card will in theory help retain customers and encourage them to gamble more than they would without card-related incentives. It also helps management discern their customers' tastes in gambling.

The odds are the same if you insert the player's card into the machine or don't use a player card.
Now, if you feel that you "win" more without the card, don't use the card.
People who use a player's card (and play long enough) get bounce back cash, comps in the form of cheap room rates or free food) and get special offers that non-player's card users get.
Good luck and win big.

Slots do pay out more at night. The reason for this is that more people are playing at night so there are more chances for a slot to hit.
Only certain people seem to win, because either they are a high stakes player, so it doesn't take much swing for them to seem like they have won a lot, or they are one of your friends who likes to brag when he wins and not say anything about his losses.

it won't change the odds, which, don't fool yourself, are different variants of being against you. it used to be that the pit bosses knew you and what you liked, and could accommodate you thusly. that is unrealistic now with the amount of traffic that goes through a major casino, so the players card is a way of computerizing your likes and dislikes and play activity. it is a good idea to get a card and play with it in that it will earn you automatic free stuff, and that they will mail you special offers and so on, but no, it won't change the odds, because you can also use it on table games.

Casinos need to know what their customers like and how they play also how much they play and how long they play. This information allows the casinos to work out what a punters theoretical loss will be and that is then used to work out what your comp value is.
